Enlightened Capes

Many of my clients are burners, which presents a set of unique wardrobe challenges. They need pieces that can withstand alkaline dust, accommodate biking, and be easy to maneuver in porta-potties. I wanted them to be lit at night for safety and create something they could wear to formal events year-round. I also wanted it to be lightweight so they could wear it indoors, during warm days, and over coats on chilly nights.

I chose a sequin fabric because I love the way it reflects sunlight during the day and sparkles subtly at night. This particular sequin fabric is built on a mesh base, which allows airflow and reduces weight. I chose a two-toned rayon lining for breathability, and found colors that wouldn’t show Playa dust easily. I also shortened the back to allow biking and prevent them from being sat on, which helps keep them cleaner.

I lined the edges with LEDs so they would be visible at night in both the front and back. I covered the lights with faux fur to diffuse the it so it would illuminate them more gently and not overpower someone talking to them. Good thing, since they told me the capes are quite the conversation starter.
